When Do Write-in Votes Count?
Our office received several calls today inquiring how Write-in Votes are counted. Missouri Law: 1. Write-in votes shall be counted for candidates who have filed a declaration of intent to be a write-in candidate with the election authority prior to 5:00 p.m. the second Friday preceding the election; 2. Write-in votes shall be counted when candidates are being elected to an office for which no candidate has filed. Cape Girardeau County has no declared Write-in candidates for the April 4, 2023 General Municipal Election.
If you live in one of the following districts, these districts have open seats in which no candidate filed for the April 4, 2023 General Municipal Election, therefore, Write-in Votes will be counted: Public Water Supply District No. 2 (Two Write-in Positions), East County Fire Protection District Board of Directors Six Year Term (One Write-in Position), North County Fire Protection District Board of Directors Six Year Term (One Write-in Position), Gordonville Fire Protection District Board of Directors Six Year Term (One Write-in Position), Village of Pocahontas Board of Trustees Two Year Term (Three Write-in Positions), Village of Pocahontas Board of Trustees One Year Term (Two Write-in Positions), Village of Oak Ridge Board of Trustees Three Year Term (Two Write-in Positions), Village of Old Appleton Board of Trustees Two Year Term (Three Write-in Positions) Contact the County Clerk Office with questions (573)243-3547 option #2
