Who We Are

The Cape Girardeau County Archive Center, founded in 2000, serves researchers as a repository for this county’s government records and genealogical resources. Our dedicated staff answers research requests from anywhere in the world and works with anyone interested in the county’s history.

Our records begin in the late 1700s, when Don Louis Lorimier was commandant of the Cape Girardeau District of Louisiana during the Spanish Regime. Records from this time period to the near present are housed at the County Archive Center, thanks to the efforts of the county government – and the Missouri Secretary of State’s Local Records Program grants.

Our collection includes records in English, German, French, and more. These records chronicle Lorimier’s founding and government actions into the twentieth century. Included are Missouri Territorial Records, records generated at the time of statehood, Civil War documents, newspapers, records of the Common Pleas Court and Circuit Court, and so much more. The building holds more than 4,500 cubic feet of records – that’s more than 8.3 million pages, or the equivalent of 15 football fields.

Our volunteer program invites members of the community to join the Archive Center staff in ongoing projects to preserve documents or improve access to information here. Please contact the Archive Center for details.
