Landlord & Tenant Laws

Many people call the prosecutor’s office with questions about landlord and tenant laws.

Unfortunately, the prosecutor’s office handles only criminal cases, so we cannot help either landlords or tenants in their disputes with each other.

If anyone has stolen property of another person, a report should be make to the police agency having jurisdiction over the matter.

Likewise, if anyone has intentionally and knowingly damaged the property of another, a report should be made to the appropriate police department.

In most situations, though, a dispute between a landlord and a tenant is a civil matter. Each party should seek the advice of a private attorney.

The Missouri Attorney General’s Office has a great deal of helpful information on its web site about landlord and tenant laws. If you are having a problem, the material is certainly worth reading.
